WHY

When we are talking about "Design for Life" there are probably many things that needs to be questioned, left could very well be right. The objective of DesignBoost at Arkitekturmuseet is to make everybody question, reach awareness and think in new paths when it comes to creating better lives for lots of people. This is after all the ultimate goal for all design. A full description of this years theme can be found in our BoostNews.

PRESENTATION OF SPEAKERS AND PANELISTS


Karim Rashid, Designer

Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 countries attest to Karim's legend of design. His award winning designs include democratic objects such as the ubiquitous Garbo waste can and Oh Chair for Umbra, interiors such as the Morimoto restaurant, Philadelphia and Semiramis hotel, Athens and exhibitions for Deutsche Bank and Audi.
Karim's Abstract: "Design is every aspect of living"I am interested in showing the world how a contemporary physical world can be warm, soft, human, and pleasurable. We will always need objects but everything in our lives should offer us some experience, touch our emotions, give us pleasure, increase our aesthetic landscape, and make us excited to be alive. Design is about shaping new movements, finding new directions, new solutions, new aesthetics: so design eventually shapes or results in trends.


Ross Lovegrove, Designer

Ross Lovegrove is truly a pioneer of industrial design. As founder of Studio X in the Notting Hill area of London, the Welsh-born designer has exuberantly embraced the potential offered by digital technologies. Many of his pieces are inspired by principles of evolution and microbiology. Ross Lovegrove has worked for clients as varied as Apple, Issey Miyake, Herman Miller and Airbus.


Ilse Crawford, Creative director and Designer at Studio Ilse

Ilse Crawford heads design company Studioilse alongside her brand consultancy. A figurehead for a design that puts the human being at the centre, she has over twenty years experience in the design business. Studioilse has a definitive approach to creating charismatic and longlasting brands through design. Fascinated by what drives us, brings us together and ultimately makes us happy, her studio manifests this through brands, buildings, furniture and products. Past projects include the award winning Mathias Dahlgren restaurant, the award winning Inn brand, and Soho House (as featured in Sex in the City). The studio is currently working on a guesthouse in Stockholm, a new breed of well being hotel in France and an event space in Hungary, a collaboration with Tadao Ando.



Richard Hutten, Designer

Richard Hutten graduated at the Academy Industrial Design Eindhoven in 1991. That same year he started his own designstudio, working on a variety of projects such as: furniture-, product-, interior- and exhibition design. He is one of the most internationally successful Dutch designers; a key exponent of "Droog Design", in which he has been involved since it's inception in 1993. His work is part of the permanent collections of, among others, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art Amsterdam, Vitra Museum Weil am Rhein, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.



Ineke Hans, Industrial designer

Since graduating from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem (NL) in 1991 and the Royal College of Art in London in 1995, Ineke Hans’ work has evolved in many ways, acquiring the identity most clearly of a designer, with the impulses of a sculptor, and the industrial experience needed to define products with a commercial life. Her work investigates the psychological roots of products, perceiving and playing with the interaction between people and objects. It centres around the pictogram and archetype.



Stephen Burks, Designer

Stephen Burks is one of the most recognized American industrial designers of his generation. He and his New York studio, Readymade Projects, have been responsible for creative direction and industrial design on projects ranging from retail interiors and events to packaging, consumer products, lighting, furniture and home accessories. He has developed innovative concepts for renowned international brands as well as continuing his commitment to sustainable design in the developing world.
Stephen's Abstract: "Made On Earth"Since 2005, industrial designer Stephen Burks has changed his approach to product design and development through his ongoing collaborations with artisans in the developing world. He has worked in South Africa, Peru, Mexico, India, Australia and Senegal with various artisan groups in collaboration with the non-profit organizations Aid To Artisans and the Nature Conservancy in fueling micro-economic recovery by building a bridge from the developing world to the first world through design.


Katrin Olina, graphic designer

Born in Iceland, Katrin Olina studied Industrial Design at the E.S.D.I. in Paris before working in the European design studios of Philippe Starck (Paris) and Ross Lovegrove (London). Since then, she has worked predominantly as a graphic artist and illustrator in the realms of industrial design, fashion, interiors, print, and animation, as well as participating in several prominent museum and gallery exhibitions.
Katrin's Abstract: "Although the creative process is a structured solution plan on one hand it is the other a mystery and a journey into the unknown."


Bjarke Ingels, Architect

Bjarke Ingels is a Danish architect. He heads the architectural practice Bjarke Ingels Group which he founded in 2006. In his designs, Bjarke Ingels often tries to achieve a balance between playful and practical approaches to architecture. One of his latest projects is the Danish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai.


Stayendra Pakhale, Designer

Satyendra Pakhale is known to be the champion of long lasting design and sustainable living. He is internationally active in the field of industrial design, transportation design, architectural design and humanitarian design etc. With international workload consisting of range of projects worldwide from industrial to cultural fields, from his design practice based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands along with extended project trips around the world, he is in a great demand.
Satyendra's Abstract: "Design for Life: Myth or reality???"Design for life as lasting products / objects / systems that could sustain for generations to generation, can become a reality only if the culture of repairing is cultivated along with it. Satyenda will talk about Design for life from humanitarian design perspective. Concluding his talk by sharing some of his recent creations for Hästens, Sweden and Tubes, Italy.


James Irvine, Architect and designer

James Irvine was born in London. England, in 1958. Trained as a furniture designer at the Royal college of Art in London, he graduated in 1984. Since then he is based in Milan. He was a member of the Olivetti design studio until 1993 and also a partner of Sottsass Associati until 1997. Today Irvine's studio designs industrial products for companies such as Canon, Artemide, and Whirpool.


Henrik Otto, Chief Designer

Henrik Otto was born in 1964 in Stockholm, Sweden. Previous to his position at Electrolux, he was head of design for Volvo cars, where he worked from 1994-2004. Before joining Volvo, Otto worked as a consultant in product design. Henrik Otto graduated from the College of Design and Art at the University of Gothenburg with an MFA in industrial design in 1990. As of fall 2004, Henrik Otto has been the Senior Vice President, Global Design of the Electrolux Group, based in Stockholm, Sweden.
Henrik's Abstract: "What if?", Do we need amorph concepts for an urbanized future?


Ilkka Suppanen, Designer

Ilkka Suppanen is one of the best-known contemporary Finnish designers. His studio offers integrated strategic design in the fields of interior, product and concept design and architecture. Suppanen’s work has been exhibited worldwide including shows at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Milan Furniture Fair and the MoMA in New York.

Gert Wingårdh, Architect

Gert Wingårdh is Sweden's best-known living architect, and has had a major influence on the Swedish architectural scene. His practice's main office is in Gothenburg, with a second office in Stockholm. He has had a number of assignments in the United States and Germany in recent years. Wingårdh is also the creator of the Swedish embassies in Washington[6] and Berlin.


Monica Förster, Designer

Monica Förster, creater of some of the most internationally renowed objects in contemporary Swedish design today, is based in Stockholm but grew up close to the artic circle in the very north of Sweden. Her work is categorized by a strong sense of pure form mixed with a neverending curiosity for new materials and technology. Always trying to work in a cross-disciplinary way, she invents and renews typologies in industrial, furniture and object design.


Jens Fager, Designer

The core of the philosophy of Jens Fager that permeates all assignments and projects, is to treat them all in an honest way, highlighting their main function. The other part is that he always add value in terms of humor, poetry and surrealism. Merged results in a natural and pull end product for both the client and the end consumer.


Thomas Sandell, Architect and designer

Thomas Sandell is realizing various projects, such as restaurants, villas, stores, offices and clinics. He has designed product lines for IKEA and various furniture, including the cupboard ”Panik”, for several international companies.Thomas Sandell has exhibited his works at several museums and fairs all over the world. He has received many awards, such as the Excellent Swedish Design for "Wedding stool" in 1990, for the bench ”Air” in 1993 and for the chair ”Akvarium” in 1997.
